Is myofasical release treatment for the face?

Although the spelling is similar, myofascial release is not a 'facial'. Rather, 'fascia' with an '-s-' refers to the connective tissue in the body. Thus, myofascial release treatment involves treating the whole body.

Is this treatment massage?

Myofascial release is not massage. With myofascial release, there are no creams, oils, or equipment---just soft hands that gently connect with tightness in the body, applying subtle pressure and waiting for the body to release in its own way and in its own time to offer long-lasting results.

Does it hurt?

The John F. Barnes method of myofascial release is gentle and never forceful. Therefore, the pressure applied is always within the person's tolerance, although even gentle pressure on very tight restrictions in some people can elicit therapeutic pain as the tissue begins to release. After a treatment session, some people experience short-term soreness as the body accommodates change. Most people, however, experience a reduction in symptoms, increased energy levels, and improved sleep patterns following treatment.

What is a first session like?

Your first session includes an evaluation that can take up to 30 minutes. In this evaluation, your body will be assessed to locate fascial restrictions in your body through touch, observation of posture, and measurements of the amount of motion in major joints of your body. Limited joint motion and imbalanced posture give indications as to where your body is tight and restricted. This information combined with your history and symptoms provides a thorough foundation on which to start myofascial release treatment.

Your first session also includes an hour-long treatment session based on the findings of the evaluation. Gentle, prolonged, hands-on pressure is applied to areas of restriction and tightness in your body until it softens and lengthens. Treatment is not forceful, does not involve manipulation, and does not use oils or creams. Within one session, you will receive hands-on treatment to various parts of your body depending on your symptoms and where your body is restricted. Therefore, allow approximately 90 minutes for a first session.

What can I expect from a myofascial release session?

Everyone responds uniquely and within their own time-frame. Most feel differences in symptoms right away while others require a number of sessions to achieve their goals of well-being. When appropriate, a treatment session includes self-treatment instruction. Your treating therapist will teach you how to use various self treatment tools to continue to address key areas of restriction so that you can speed your progress, require fewer hands-on treatment sessions, and learn how to prevent future problems.

What does fascia look like?

To the naked eye, fascia looks fibrous and is whitish in color. The thick, sinewy tissue in raw beef or chicken that looks like cling-wrap and is difficult to cut is fascia. To see a video of magnified fascia in a live, human being, click here.

How often should I schedule treatment sessions?

Ultimately, you decide. Because results are authentic and long-lasting, there is no set, prescribed protocol or schedule. After the completion of an assessment and treatment, your therapist can make more accurate recommendations regarding treatment frequency. In general, one session per week or fortnight is recommended to start. More involved cases or long-standing problems may require multiple sessions per week. Treatment frequency can be decreased once your symptoms begin to resolve or increased if you reach a plateau in your progress. By treating the whole body and the cause of your symptoms, most people achieve their goals within a few weeks. Once goals have been met, regular ongoing treatment is not necessary.

What is a co-treatment?

Choose to upgrade your sessions and speed your progress. Receive treatment from two therapists simultaneously and further enhance your healing process. An extra set of hands means that more tight areas in your body can be addressed within a one-hour session.
